| FIRST U.S. SOLO RELEASE FROM MAT CALLAHAN | ||
| Mat Callahan, former leader of world beat pioneers the Looters, releases his debut (U.S.) solo release A Wild Bouquet. The CD release coincides with the release of his book The Trouble with Music (AK Press).
Callahan leans heavily on his tremendous and deeply ranged voice, unleashing a torrent of pop hooks. Formidable and brash- Editor's Pick/Smother.netA Wild Bouquet features Callahan as singer-songwriter, surrounded by incredible musicians Brain (Tom Waits, Guns & Roses) on drums, Joe Gore (PJ Harvey) on guitar and bassist Les Claypool (Primus). Pete Scaturro produced most of the album. His compositions on this recording incorporate his worldly musical savoir-faire with ambience controlling poetics; it's pop balladry in its purest sense. His vocals are confident with minimalist soundscapes existing beneath. Don't expect the acerbic slash of a tongue warmed in music-bullshit-hell; expect soft ruminations from a man obviously still in love with his muse. These are indeed beautiful, well-executed songs crafted by an honest musical hero.- Abel Folgar, Transform Online (see full story) | ||
